GLIDESLOPE LIMITATIONS NOTED

November 25 , 2008

The following e-mail was sent by Chris Veal, Deputy Airport Director, in response to a question about the NOTAM announcing the restoration of the ILS at Smith Reynolds:

Andy:

Per your request, I checked on the restrictions on our glideslope system. Basically, there is a minimum restriction of 8 degrees each side of course on all glideslopes of the type we have here. However, because of terrain and other issues, our glideslope has a restriction of 4 degrees right of course and 7 degrees left of course. I believe that the glideslope will actually give an indication beyond these restrictions, but the FAA will not certify the indications to be accurate outside of these parameters.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Chris

(Please note that pilots should check pertinent NOTAMs prior to any flight in order to obtain the latest official FAA flight information. - Andy Dale)

ILS FINALLY REPAIRED

November 19 , 2008

The ILS for Runway 33 was finally repaired earlier this month after a 22 month wait. It was around January 1, 2007 that the old ILS failed, and it has taken this long to get a new one installed and certified.

As of now, there is a restriction on usability of the glidepath beyond 4 degrees right of course and 7 degrees left of course, so check NOTAMs carefully.

LOCAL PILOT AWARDED BRONZE LINDY

August 15 , 2008

WSAA Member Tom McKim stopped off at AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on his way to a vacation in Montana. It was a very good stop. Tom's Piper Comanche PA-24-260, N9171P, was awarded a Bronze Lindy at the show in the Contemporary Class III Single Engine (231-Up HP) category. Tom has spent many hours (and lots of treasure) making his plane one of the best Comanches flying.

Tom and his plane had already been scheduled for a photo session in Winston-Salem for the next "Featured Pilot" article. Click the "Featured Pilot" button to the left to see Tom's story.

NEW T-HANGARS APPROVED

June 19 , 2008

The WSAA has learned that 28 new T-hangars were approved by the Airport Commission of Forsyth County for construction near the current South ramp tie-down location.  There will be three sizes of T-hangars, which will be similar in size to the two sizes at the current South T-hangar location plus a stand-alone type hangar.  Further details will be published when available.

The existing 31 South T-hangars were constructed in 1997 and opened for occupancy at the beginning of October, 1997.  Older T-hangars on the field next to the approach end of runway 22 are controlled by Landmark Aviation.  Landmark also operates the large North Hangar and the hangar behind Piedmont Flight Training on the Landmark ramp.

The first Winston-Salem Air Classic in the modern era was held in October, 1993. Shows from 1994 through 2005 were held in September on the weekend after Labor Day.

Past Air Shows have included such famous performers as Patti Wagstaff, who was U.S. Aerobatics Champion for three years, and has been a perennial performer at Oshkosh.

Military aircraft such as the Navy's F-14 Tomcat have appeared at the Winston-Salem Classic Air Show.

New for this year was a parade of local airplanes, with many different types of planes landing on Runway 33 and taxiing in front of the crowd on Taxiway Alpha.
